Cyber Motorcycle

A joke, or a vision of a highly mobile, emissions-free future? Sometimes, it’s tough to tell with these concept cars. But the 3R-C has attracted enough attention to warrant its inclusion here–many say they’d gladly take the electric cyber-motorcycle home. Others feel that it belongs on a set of (insert sci-fi film here) and will never see mass production.

EMF and Electric cars

We’re still in a pickle about this whole how-to-fuel-the-vehicles-that-shape-our-society thing, but electric cars seem to be a step in the right the direction. We still have to generate electricity for these cars, and electricity generation, for the most part, pollutes. Electric cars pollute less and that’s all we can ask for until we get some of this non-polluting electricity—like wind and solar—that we’ve had our eyes on. Many of us have never seen an electric car, let alone driven one. We may ask, “How do electric cars affect your health?”

The Health Benefits
Electric cars don’t burn fossil fuels. Car exhaust can damage lungs. Idling emissions can lead to respiratory illnesses—pneumonia, emphysema, bronchitis, etc—and even cancer. An electric car doesn?t generate these types of emissions. Also, an electric car will never accidentally kill anyone who leaves their car running in a confined space.

The Health Risks
There are some who fear the electricity generated by the electric car. An article in the New York Times, takes a look at these risks. Some worry that the electromagnetic fieldsgenerated by hybrids and electric cars are unhealthy. There is some speculation that the EMFs cause leukemia in the unborn. One lady says that after driving a hybrid 200 miles a day for work, she got high blood pressure and fell asleep at the wheel three times.

Are the Health Risks Real?
The health risks are mostly conjecture. First, no one has proven that EMFs cause cancer. EMFs might. It’s possible, but no one is really sure. Furthermore, even if some EMFs caused cancer, you’d then have to prove that the EMFs in hybrids and in electric cars cause cancer. Some people might be sensitive to EMFs, but that is an unknown factor as well. For safety’s sake, pregnant women may want to consult a doctor before driving a hybrid or an electric car.

The only real health risk is crashing your car, but you don’t need an electric car to do that.

Small Changes in Two Genes May Trigger Breast Cancer

THURSDAY, May 13 (HealthDay News) — Slight changes in the expression of two common genes trigger cellular changes that can lead to breast cancer, a new study finds.

The researchers adjusted the expression of the genes — estrogen receptor alpha and p53 — in mice but said the tweaks they made in the rodents likely mimic natural variations of the two genes in women.

“It was believed that both of these genes only act once breast cancer had developed,” lead investigator Dr. Priscilla A. Furth, a professor of oncology and medicine at Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University Medical Center, said in a news release. She added that p53 mutations are found in many cancers, including breast cancer, and that a majority of breast cancer patients have over-expression of this common estrogen receptor.

“What wasn’t known is that different levels of expression of these genes can help launch the cellular changes that lead to breast cancer. That suggests that testing women for their own variations in these genes might potentially give us a clue as to which women are at higher risk for development of breast cancer,” she said.

In this study, Furth and colleagues developed mice that lacked one copy of the p53 gene (mice and humans have two copies of this gene, one from each parent). This gene regulates cell growth and is a powerful tumor suppressor. Changes in p53 are seen in 30 percent to 40 percent of breast cancer cases.

In another group of mice, the researchers boosted expression of estrogen receptor alpha by twofold, a level of increase sometimes seen in women. Nearly 70 percent of breast cancer patients have estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer, they noted.

Both groups of mice showed significant precancerous changes in breast tissue. Those changes were even more evident in mice that had one p53 gene as well as twice as much estrogen receptor expression.

“Normal breast tissue functioning requires a balance of cell growth and cell death, and in this study we found that both deregulated estrogen receptor function and p53 expression independently, and in combination, altering this balance and transforming cells,” Furth said.

“These are not the only two molecules that are responsible for breast cancer development, but they are important and they can potentially provide us with an early warning or even with prevention strategies,” she added.

The study was published online May 13 in the journal Cancer Research.

Dr. Flora Speaks About Oils in Your Diet

Although Drs. Campbell, Esselstyn, Barnard, Fuhrman, McDougall, and Popper may disagree on more subtle points of plant-based nutrition, they are all in total agreement thatoil is not a health food. Oil is not a whole food – it’s like sugar in this way – it’s a part of a food that has been extracted from plants and concentrated, packing in way too much fat and no fiber.

It doesn’t matter what your Omega-3/Omega-6 ration is if you’re eating way too much fat – it’s just not good for you, and none of them promote the use of free oils of any kinds.

Their cookbooks “contain no recipes with free oil” but contain nut butters. Darn, they contain free oils, They are saturated fats.

Peanut butter, almond butter, etc., because they were not soaked first before blending, and they have had to be heated up to be put into a jar to be sterilized.

They are dead. That dead fat from the peanut butter or almond butter will dissolve artery linings.

Banana Tree in Bloom

Look at this beautiful Cavendish banana tree. This flower is just beginning and will take about 2 – 4 months depending on the weather to receive ripe bananas. Once a banana tree starts to flower you should get blooms every year thereafter. Plant one today and get bananas in a few years. It’s worth it. More to come and pictures as the bloom progresses.

Herbs Prevent Hair Loss: Lavender, Ginseng, Aloe Vera, Dong Quai

Many herbs have been shown to prevent hair loss and enable hair to grow. Thinning hair, or alopecia, is a condition that is caused by aging and also genetics. Nutritional deficiencies can also cause hair loss. Herbs have been used for thousands of years to help regrow hair. Taken internally or applied to the scalp, herbs are a gentle and natural way to prevent hair loss and stimulate hair growth.

Polygonum Multiflorum is Used to Recolor and Regrow Hair
Polygonum is known in Chinese medicine as He Shou Wu. For centuries this herb has been used to treat hair loss. Recently, the American Botanical Council reported that this herb may be useful to restore color to graying hair, as well as stimulating hair growth.

Ginseng Stimulates Hair Growth
Ginseng is another herb long used in Chinese medicine. The herb is an adaptogen, helping the body adapt to stress, which is known to be a cause of hair loss. Ginseng is found in shampoos as well as tinctures that can be taken internally.

Lavender Stimulates the Scalp
Lavender oils can be applied to the hair and massaged into the scalp. The herb draws the blood to the scalp, which helps prevent hair loss.

Thorn Apple Prevents Hair Loss
Thorn Apple, also known as Jimsonweed, is a toxic herb that has been shown to help regrow hair. Used in Chinese herbal medicine for thousands of years to treat digestive disorders and even tuberculosis, Thorn Apple contains toxins known as scopolamine and hyoscyamine. The toxic alkaloids are also used in medicine as a gastric antispasmodic. The dried leaves are used to treat cough. Drinking fruit from the juice staves off hair loss, but high doses can cause irregular heartbeat and even coma.

Dong Quai Restores Hormonal Balance and Grows Hair
Known as Dong Quai in Chinese medicine, the herb Angelica is used to stop hair loss. The active ingredient is an herbal form of a testosterone stimulant, called a phytotestosterone.

Aloe Vera Gel Soothes the Scalp
The gel from the Aloe Vera plant soothes skin and acts as an anti-inflammatory when applied externally. By massaging the gel into the scalp, the pH balance of the scalp is restored and this helps regrow hair. Aloe also helps the hair retain water, and since one quarter of the hair is made up of water, this important function of Aloe Vera enables hair to remain nourished.

Eco-labels on products are often just lies

In a recent feature, Mother Jones Magazine calls attention to the fact that many “green” or “socially responsible” claims made on product labels are meaningless or deceptive, even when accompanied by a certification seal.

Meaningless claims are those that allude to weak or nonexistent standards. For example, there is no process for certifying a product as “cruelty free,” “hormone free,” “no additives,” “hypoallergenic,” “green,” “earth smart” or “nature’s friend.” This means that a piece of steak prominently labeled as “hormone free,” “additive free,” and “cruelty free” could contain food coloring and come from a cow that was only allowed to move when it was time for its hormone injection.

Other deceptive claims include “natural” — which only means that a food does not contain artificial flavors, preservatives or other synthetic ingredients — and “biodegradable,” which only means that a product must be made from ingredients that “return to nature.” “Nontoxic” products are certified to not cause poisoning if ingested, but may still be carcinogenic or cause other long-term health effects. “Fragrance free” products are those with no noticeable smell but may contain any number of chemicals, while “free range” poultry came from birds that had “access” to the outdoors for the majority of their lives. This does not mean that the animals ever saw the outside, and has no meaning at all if applied to eggs or meat from a mammal.

Some standards, while real enough, are still deceptive and may include significant loopholes. For example, wood and paper products certified under the industry-created Sustainable Forestry Initiative may come from clearcut forests or pesticide-intensive tree farms. “Dolphin Safe” tuna may be produced by killing any number of sea turtles or other endangered species, and companies making products certified “Carbonfree” simply paid someone to “offset” their greenhouse gas emissions.

The practice of carbon offsets has garnered heavy criticism for allowing companies to keep emitting the same amount of carbon dioxide by simply paying someone else for conservation practices they would have engaged in anyway — thereby leading to no reduction in overall greenhouse gas emissions. The practice has been parodied on the Web site www.cheatneutral.com.

Take Action to Get GMOs Out of the Food Supply

According to Jeffery Smith, a leading GMO activist, when a critical number of consumers abandon GMO foods and brands, it will be enough to force them out of common products and get them out of our food supply. Want to help? Print this food guidehttp://www.nongmoshoppingguide.com/… and this articlehttp://www.responsibletechnology.or…. Then, share them with your friends, family and coworkers. Share them with dozens of people who might not otherwise have access to this information and be sure your contacts also have easy access to both URLs. If they feel the information is important, ask them to print it and pass it along too.

The second article details all of the deaths in farm animals that GMOs have caused, as well as a considerable amount of research showing the infertility, organ damage and other tragic health consequences they create. The dangers of GMOs are hard to deny – even if government officials and the GM industry keep doing so.

To be part of the solution, you’ll also need to avoid GMOs and brands that use them. For an even greater impact, send a quick note to the companies producing the brands you plan to drop and let them know that GMOs are the reason. Hundreds of these notes coming in each day are bound to make an impact, and probably quickly.

Most mainstream grocery stores line their shelves with foods containing GMOs, so if a natural GMO-free grocery store is in your town it would be a good idea to frequent it instead. You can also drop your former grocery store a line to let them know that the GMO brands they carry are the reason you’re making the switch. Pressure from all sides can help produce change and if grocery stores refuse to carry GMOs, many manufacturers will be forced to change or go out of business.

It also wouldn’t hurt to pick up the phone and call your government representatives. Let them know what you reallythink about GMOs currently being in 90 percent of all processed foods – and fed to the large majority of farm animals those meat or dairy end up on dinner tables. Then, send them the second article above and ask them how exactly they think they’re protecting the public or the food supply by allowing genetically mutant DNA into the food supply. Let them know that creating disease is never considered protecting the public and that you’re following their actions on this matter closely – and you should actually do that too.
